The Waitt Foundation worked with Greenpeace USA during the summer of 2012 to help inform the science of the Arctic. We sent our submersible to the deepest underwater canyons in the Bering Sea and found an amazingly complex and flourishing ecosystem including a massive Skate nursery. We then pushed north into the Chukchi and the Arctic Circle proper and again observed amazing vitality while making the first private collection of a coral in the Arctic, right on top of sites where developers wish to drill for oil. There can be no question, drilling for oil in the Arctic is an invitation to disaster.
