NATIVITY PREP USES GRANT TO CONNECT WITH THE DIGITAL AGE

San Diego, CA- Nativity Prep's mission is to provide a tuition-free, college prep education to underserved children in San Diego. Nativity Prep received a Waitt Family Foundation grant and bought 15 Gateway computers, and 4 printers. The students use the computers during language arts, math, study hall and conduct research on the Internet. The teachers use a laptop in conjunction with a projector to make presentations to their classes.

Currently, Nativity Prep is looking at the best way to provide computer training for the parents to assist them with job readiness. The school has conducted a computer needs assessment for parents to determine what skills they would like to learn. Nativity Prep will soon begin computer classes and open computer lab hours for the students and their families.

Before receiving this grant the school had 5 mismatched and semi-functional computers in 3 classrooms. Now they have 15 matching, brand new computers. The opportunity for these students to work on state-of-the-art computers in their classrooms is a great start for ensuring all students learn computer basics.

Alexis Bateman, Development Coordinator, AmericorpsVISTA writes, "Your investment in our school community is really helping to make our students and, soon, our parents full participants in the digital age. "
